Used Spin Coater and Developer Buying Guide

How to buy used spin coaters and developers without getting burned. Real prices, common failures, and what to inspect before you wire money.

This guide is for: a process engineer or equipment buyer trying to stretch a $50k budget without inheriting a money pit.

I once sold a guy a 2008 AMAT P5000 spin coater for $28k. Six weeks later, he begged me to take it back after it flooded his cleanroom during a resist load. He’d skipped the vacuum pump inspection. Three days and $3k later, I’d hauled it back. That’s how you learn: the hard way.

$18k–$45k Later… Is It Fixed?

Let’s talk money. A mid-2000s spin coater in “working” condition costs $18k–$35k. A developer? $20k–$50k. But “working” means different things. I’ve seen buyers drop $40k on a tool only to replace the drive motor ($2k), the edge ring ($550), and the vacuum manifold ($7k) within six months. You’re not buying a machine. You’re buying a parts list.

What to Look for in a Used Spin Coater

Start with the vacuum system. 35% of used spin coaters I sell have latent vacuum pump failures. Pop the access panel and run the pump: it should pull ≤10 mTorr in 30 seconds. If it takes longer, you’re paying for a new pump (typically $4k–$6k).

Next, check the motor drive. Look for frayed belts or scorch marks on the inverter. A burnt-out servo? That’s $1.2k for a used Panasonic model, plus labor. And don’t skip the quartz linerQuartz Liner. Cracks or pitting mean you’re looking at $2.5k–$4k for a replacement.

Common Failures in Developers

Developers are simpler mechanically, but the showerheadShowerhead is a ticking bomb. 25% of used developers I’ve handled have clogged or warped plates. Run a dye test with water. If the spray pattern is uneven, you’ll need to replace it. A new Lambda part: $1.8k.

Also, inspect the developer chemistry lines. Corrosion in the tubing? That’s $300–$500 for PFA tubing plus $400 for a new peristaltic pump. You can’t cheap out here.

Model-Specific Gotchas

  • AMAT P5000 (2003–2010): The most common model I sell. Know this: the edge ring driver board Edge Ring has a 15% failure rate after 12 years. Ask for the board’s serial number and cross-reference it with the logsheet.
  • SPTS 351S (2012–2015): Excellent precision, but the motor controller costs $7k new. Always confirm the controller’s warranty status.
  • Tokyo Electron ELANTIS (2001–2006): These are beasts if the pump is good. But the pump? $8k–$10k if it’s shot.

Real Market Prices (And What They Hide

You’ll see ads for “$12k spin coater – clean, no documentation.” Run. A clean machine without a full service log is a liability. A fully serviced P5000 (with replaced liner, pump, and motor belts) should cost $32k–$38k. If it’s cheaper, assume the next part failure is on you.

Part Replacement Costs: Hidden Sunk Expenses

| Part | Average Cost | Failure Rate (After 10 Years) |
|------|--------------|-------------------------------|
| Drive motor | $1.5k | 20% |
| Vacuum pump | $5.2k | 35% |
| Quartz liner | $3.1k | 40% |

These rates jump if the machine wasn’t maintained. Always ask for the last PM date. If it’s more than 18 months ago, factor in a 10% buffer for parts.

4 Steps to Not Get Scammed

  1. Verify the serial number: Cross-check the model year. A 2000 P5000 isn’t the same as a 2008.
  2. Demand a dye leak test: Fill the chamber with water + food coloring. Run the spin for 2 minutes. Any stains? You’re paying for a liner.
  3. Check the vacuum curve: Run the pump and log the pressure at 10-, 30-, and 60-second intervals. Compare it to factory specs.
  4. Get a parts list from the seller: If they refuse, send it back.

FAQ

"How much does a used spin coater cost?"
$18k–$50k, depending on age and service history. A 2010 P5000 with a fresh PM? $35k. A 2003 “as is” model? $25k… until the pump dies.

"What's the failure rate for used developers?"
22% for the showerhead, 18% for the peristaltic pump. Always replace the O-rings ($50–$100) during checkout.

"Are AMAT P5000 spin coaters reliable?"
Yes… if the edge ring actuator is good. Edge Ring parts are expensive. Ask for the actuator’s service date.

"How to test a used spin coater before buying?"
Run a 3-minute spin at 3,000 RPM. The chamber should remain stable. Vibration = bad news for wafer alignment.

"What parts fail most on used developers?"
Showerheads, O-rings, and chemistry valves. A full fluid line inspection costs $500–$800. Don’t skip it.
