What are you buying: a system or a process module?

Lam's historical 4520XLE release describes via and trench etching for dual-damascene applications and identifies both standalone systems and process modules on the Alliance platform. Use that distinction when reviewing a used-equipment offer: ask whether it includes a complete system, a chamber/module or a retrofit package.

The same release discusses retrofitting 4520XLE hardware and technology onto Rainbow 4520 systems. Do not treat that historical statement as approval for the specific combination in a seller's quote. Request an engineering review of the exact hardware and documentation.

Match the quoted configuration

Before discussing price, request:

• Nameplate photographs and serial numbers for the system and each offered module.
• The mainframe, chamber designation, wafer-handling configuration and installed control software.
• An itemized list of included pumps, RF equipment, gas-delivery components, cooling equipment and accessories.
• The previous process materials, maintenance history, decontamination records and any modifications.
• An explicit list of removed or missing assemblies.

Ask the supplier to distinguish what was inspected, what was replaced and what has been demonstrated. Do not accept a generic "refurbished" label as the scope of work.

Agree on acceptance criteria before purchase

Have a qualified equipment engineer write the test plan for your intended process. Request documented wafer-transfer operation, vacuum performance, RF operation, alarms and safety-interlock checks against that plan. Require the report to identify the instruments, methods, conditions and quoted serial numbers.

For process acceptance, supply representative test wafers and agree on the film stack, recipe, measurement method and acceptance limits. Request the measured etch results and exception list, not only a video of the tool powering on. Keep any hazardous-gas or energized testing under qualified site procedures.

Ask for separate amounts for equipment, refurbishment, acceptance testing, packing, transport, installation and service. Record who will remedy missing items or failed acceptance tests. Obtain the seller's written warranty and delivery terms before comparing total cost.
