Used KLA Surfscan SP3: Configuration and Buying Checks

Verify a used Surfscan SP3 with OEM model information, serial-linked test data and a scoped quote. Prior unsupported pricing and variant claims corrected.

Correction — September 30, 2026: We previously published SP3 price ranges, service-cost estimates and transaction anecdotes that were insufficiently supported. That was our mistake, and we apologize. We have removed them and corrected the laser, variant and sensitivity claims against KLA documentation. Do not rely on the earlier figures. We do not have sufficient verified transaction evidence to publish a replacement market-value range.

This guide is for: Engineers and buyers deciding whether a particular used Surfscan SP3 can meet their inspection requirements. The recommendations below are purchasing checks, not OEM service instructions or certification of an offered tool.

SP3 uses DUV, not the UV specification we previously gave

KLA introduced the Surfscan SP3 on July 11, 2011 as an unpatterned wafer inspection platform using deep-ultraviolet (DUV) illumination and DUV-optimized optics. The announcement describes a new stage and image computer, multiple illumination and collection channels, and integrated SURFmonitor surface-quality mapping. Our previous 355nm UV description was incorrect.

The OEM launch announcement explicitly targets the 28nm device node and below. Our earlier statement that a base SP3 generally cannot qualify 28nm processes was wrong. A device node is not a particle-size sensitivity specification, and an OEM application statement does not prove that a used unit will pass your acceptance test.

Verify model names and wafer configuration

We have removed the unsupported “base SP3 versus SP3-XP” price and sensitivity tiers. The KLA documents reviewed for this correction do not substantiate the variant mapping or the associated 65nm/45nm limits we published. Do not assume a seller's suffix proves a particular laser, channel count or performance level.

KLA's SP3/Ax brochure covers a family of configurations. Its discussion of multiple wafer sizes must not be read as saying every SP3 handles each size. KLA's SP A2/A3 fact sheet separately identifies SP A2 for 150mm/200mm and SP A3 for 300mm. Require the exact offered model and installed handler documentation.

Request a legible nameplate and serial number, configuration list, software version and enabled options. Have the seller distinguish installed features from optional capabilities described in a family brochure.

Agree on acceptance before negotiating condition claims

Define the wafer diameter, material and surface; defect types; reference standards; scan recipe; sensitivity and repeatability requirements; and required throughput. Have your metrology team set pass/fail limits for that application. We are not supplying a universal PSL threshold, power percentage or map-variation limit.

Ask for serial-linked, dated test evidence and raw results, not just a calibration label or a video of wafer handling. Recommended checks include:

  1. Repeat scans of agreed reference wafers using a recorded recipe.
  2. Full-wafer maps and comparison with the agreed reference results.
  3. Haze or surface-quality checks where required by the application.
  4. Handling and stage checks performed by a qualified engineer.
  5. A written factory/site acceptance plan, including what happens if the tool does not meet it.

A pre-deinstallation result is historical evidence. Identify what current testing is possible and which checks must occur after installation. Missing data should remain an explicit qualification gap.

Laser and service history: ask for records, not an invented lifespan

Request laser identification, replacement history, runtime records, power-stability data and maintenance reports. Ask the proposed service provider to interpret them for the installed system. Our previous universal lifetime, power-health and failure-rate claims were not adequately supported and have been withdrawn.

Obtain written scope and pricing for any inspection, repair, calibration, installation and support work. Do not assume a replacement component, a software entitlement or an OEM service agreement is included because a listing says “refurbished.” Verify software rights and support eligibility separately from possession of the machine.

Pricing: no substantiated market range

We cannot support a current SP3 market-value range with verified transaction evidence. The earlier condition-based price table, laser-cost table and new-versus-used savings comparisons have been removed. An asking price, even when publicly advertised, does not establish a sale price or fair value.

Compare written offers only after identifying the asset and scope: tool completeness, test status, repair work, packing, transport, software rights, installation, acceptance and warranty. Check serial numbers before counting advertisements as separate comparables. Do not make a budget by averaging unverified listings.

Before paying a deposit

Obtain the current location, seller's authority to sell, serial-linked packing list, deinstallation and storage history, current test evidence, commercial terms and written exclusions. Make any purchase conditional on the documentation and acceptance terms you actually require. If those requirements cannot be established, do not treat the system as qualified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much does a used KLA Surfscan SP3 cost? A: We have withdrawn our previous ranges. A current quote must identify the unit, condition and inclusions; we do not have a substantiated replacement market-value range.

Q: What is the difference between SP3 and SP3-XP? A: Our earlier explanation was unsupported. Verify the exact model and options against OEM records rather than relying on that suffix or our former sensitivity tiers.

Q: Can an SP3 support 28nm applications? A: KLA introduced SP3 for the 28nm device node and below. Whether an individual used unit meets your needs must be demonstrated under an agreed acceptance protocol.

Q: How long does an SP3 laser last? A: We are not publishing a universal lifetime. Request the installed laser's service records and applicable OEM or qualified-service guidance.

Q: Can I assume an SP3 is suitable for a 200mm fab? A: No. Confirm the specific model, handler, wafer format and application. Do not apply the full SP3/Ax family's capabilities to every unit.
